About

Every structure is ultimately supported by the ground.
How well it performs over time depends on how that ground behaves.
Every project has a story. More often than we realize, that story is written below the surface.

Yet the ground is often one of the least understood—and most taken-for-granted—parts of a project. Its behavior is influenced by geology, water, construction, design, landscaping, weather, time, and the countless interactions between them.

SoilMechanix is a place to explore those interactions.

Through field observations, sketches, photographs, engineering concepts, and real-world examples, this site examines how the ground behaves—and why it matters. Some articles explain established principles. Others begin with a simple question and follow where the evidence leads.

The purpose is not simply to share answers, but to develop a deeper understanding of the ground beneath us. As I continue to observe, question, and learn, I share that journey here.

Whether you’re a homeowner, contractor, student, or engineer, I hope these discussions help you see the ground a little differently.

Because understanding the ground is the first step toward building on it well.
